In the wall and ceiling industry, approximately 20 percent of the workforce is unionized, and as a result of collective bargaining, those employed by union shops have medical insurance provided as part of their compensation. After interviewing literally thousands of non-union workers over 20-plus years as a union representative, my educated guess would be that less than 15 percent of non-union or “open shop” companies in our industry offer any form of medical insurance option to their employees. Let’s be generous and say that another 25 percent of the non-union sector has some form of health insurance provided from their spouse’s employer. That leaves at least 50 percent of all the workers in our trade unprotected in the event of a serious medical issue. So what is such a person to do if they or a loved one come down with diabetes, heart disease, or cancer?

Why the emergency room of course …

In America we wouldn’t turn away someone in need. They may have to wait an incredibly long time to be seen in an emergency room, but eventually they will be seen and treated. So this raises a number of the questions like, who picks up the tab?

Just like any other aspect of doing business, hospitals pass along the cost to the consumer. In this case it means higher premiums for the medical insurance the other half of us now enjoy (premiums have risen an average of 40 percent in the last 5 years) or the cost is taken care of by some form of welfare assistance such as medical, where the taxpayer foots the bill.

Is it fair for union employers to pay for medical insurance when non-union ones generally don’t?

Is it fair for the employees of an open shop contractor to receive medical care paid for by the rest of us who are paying for insurance?

Wouldn’t it make competition in the wall and ceiling industry fairer if all employers had to provide medical insurance for their employees; or if the government provided a public option for everyone where the cost was shared equally?

Title: Health Care Reform


My fondest hope would be to remove health care from the workplace. Why should a family only be entitled to health care by virtue of employment or even money? Why should we allow the worst employers the best competitive advantage when bidding work? Why should our unions be hamstrung negotiating for a benefit that knows no limits to constant price increases? We are being strangled by the private insurance model. It is truly criminal that the Democratic negotiators took single payer out of contention before even commencing negotiations on a bill.

I am a bit leary of the government running this health care, BUT!!! The alternative is, as the author stated, I (we) will continue to pay higher premiums for those who choose not to pay at all. There are many good non-union outfits, large and small, that do pay insurance to their employees but reality is not everyone does. We in the union industries are lucky to have what we do, but how much more can our employers and families pay!! Maybe if health care was provided many people wouldn't have to work into their 70's just to keep up with the medical issues and it would make room for younger employees as those who can afford it would retire earlier.I think that in this day and age and in this great nation everyone deserves health care and it should be provided. The debates that are going on are healthy but to much information is not accurate, and politically motivated. A well thought out plan with details about a transition to a national health care needs to be put forth by the administration to give everyone something to evaluate so we can move to the next step.

There is no doubt our country is messed up on health care and Bill's comments make sense to me. The cartoon video is pretty easy to understand.

For thos who question if the Government could really run this program more effeciently than private insurance, lets look at Workers Compensation in California. The State started the program to help the constrcution industry, insurance companies did not want the risk. Low profit.

State Fund ( Governemnt run) did so well, they expanded inot other more profitable areas. Largest insurer from workers in California.

Now that California is broke, they want to sell off the more profitable part of its business. This means we in constrcution may be paying a lot more soon. Maybe that fair, but it proves, the government can be effcient in insurance.
