On March 28, Radius Track received the Excellence in Construction Award from CISCA, the Ceiling and Interior Systems Contractor Association. The Award, presented this week at CISCA’s annual convention, recognizes the company for excellence in designing and fabricating curved cold-formed steel framing for the Faena Forum, Miami Beach, Fla. The project received top honors, the Gold award, in the Southeast Region’s Ceilings category for difficult and complex projects.

CISCA applauded the complex framing design and manufacturing contributions Radius Track Corporation made to the successful delivery of the 70-foot diameter spiral coffered dome. The dome required finishing on both sides, and two-hour fire rating. That meant all the light-gauge box-beam trusses acting as primary structural framing had to be streamlined and wrapped in three layers of gypsum wall board. All the dome framing is Curved-Right, the line of custom framing Radius Track designs utilizing 3-D modeling, CNC fabricates, and delivers as a kit of parts with installation instructions and support through close out.

Radius Track worked closely with Titus Construction Group, the framing and finish subcontractor to deliver an efficient, cost effective solution that met the design intent, structural, Miami Dade NOA, and fire safety code requirements. Bill Hassel, Titus President & Owner, said, “Radius Track added value and solved technical challenges for the project at every step, from engineering, consulting, and fabrication through installation assistance. It seemed as if their Senior Design Technologist was available to us 24/7.”

Titus Construction installed each 35-foot long truss with chain hoists, scaffolds and cranes to precise locations flush to the compression ring using laser levels and measured points on each truss. With all trusses in place and drywall wrapped, preformed purlin and hat-channel installation commenced followed by the compound curved spiral framing. Outsourcing the custom fabricated dome framing saved Titus time and allowed them to focus on other scope and coordination needs.

With deep expertise developed over 20 years and more than 6,000 custom projects, Radius Track continues to lead the complex and curved framing industry with cold-formed steel, aluminum, and stainless framing solutions. Chuck Mears, FAIA and Chief Design Officer says, “The 5-Step Process we employ outlines the level of services and products we provide to our customers and allows them to decide when to engage our expertise. Some choose to bring us on during design to validate constructability while others call on us to unify the complex elements into a constructable framing solution.”

Bill Hassel, President and Owner, and Nathan Pardue, Vice President & Owner, with Titus Construction along with Chuck Mears, CDO and Owner, Luanne Ketchie, Director of Sales, and Scott Finley, Account Manager-Southwest with Radius Track accepted the award for their work on the dome, the crowning jewel at Faena Forum Designed by OMA. They also credit the project’s success to: L&W Supply – Hialeah, Tamarack Materials Inc., Marino Ware, USG, Hunter Douglas, and Baswa Phon, all fellow CISCA Members.
