Carrying some tough measures, such as allowing police to ask for legal documentation at any time from anyone they please, this bill has some far-reaching consequences-the largest of which might be psychological. Members of your present workforce will walk around with compounded levels of fear, as if this is not already an issue. Will the new proposed fences to be built on the border as part of this Bill hold back a future group of immigrants? It is doubtful, to be sure.
The old Patent Office Building located in Washington D.C., has served our country since July 4, 1836. It is the third oldest federal building still in use in our nation's Capitol and as its name suggests, the building was originally the home of the U.S. Patent Office and invention exhibit. Said to be one of the largest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States, this historic structure survived two fires and was saved from the wrecking ball by an act of Congress. It was given to the Smithsonian Institute in 1968, serving as the National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum.
The lowest of the lowbrows are people taken by the transparent Internet con games. By now everyone with an e-mail address has been contacted by an African of supposedly royal heritage willing to cut you in on millions of ill-gotten dollars if only you will assist in getting the moolah out of the country. A variation on the theme has an alleged lawyer searching for a living relative of someone with your last name who was tragically killed in a car accident leaving lots of money behind. Or you've been notified of winning a foreign lottery that you never knew existed.
Gypsum wallboard or "drywall" has become the preferred surface material used in the construction of interior walls and partitions. In residential construction, gypsum wallboard is also the preferred material for interior ceiling surfaces. Now that this material is so commonly used and surrounds us in our daily lives, we tend to think of it in terms of a plain, flat, bland surface over which a neutral colored paint or nondescript wallcovering is applied.
To what extent should society insist on terrorist-proof buildings? In post-Sept. 11, should we construct every new building so that it is completely safe from a terrorist action or should we view terrorism as a random event and construct buildings much as we have in the past?
One of the questions I am frequently asked is how to fix sealant joints when the edge of the EIFS is coming apart or the sealant has detached from the EIFS, or when the sealant simply wears out. Sometimes, the old sealant can be removed and the existing edge of the EIFS reused for the application of new sealant.
"No matter how close a friend you are, you must kill that person. When it is over, you can shake hands and be a friend again," said Kutilda Woods, mother of golf maverick Tiger. No doubt in my mind that Tiger's competitive spirit came from his mother. All of us who heard her say these words on "60 Minutes" knew she did not mean to "kill" literally. She is a play-to-win kind of woman and she instilled this attitude in Tiger.
We'll go two different directions this time around. First, we're discussing an older home and a repair project I did recently and an exciting plaster finish that I'm sure you'll be interested in knowing more about.
Believe me when I say I enjoy reader feedback. Occasionally, readers call to say specifically what they liked or didn't like in the current issue. Great. Less frequently, I receive something in writing that I can publish.
This month, we'll begin a series that takes an in-depth look into all aspects of sheathing materials used in modern-day construction. In particular, we'll focus on the environmental concerns, thus complementing the "Déjà Vu x 2" series recently concluded, which examined alternatives for formaldehyde-based binders and substitutes for wood fiber in composite wood panel products.
