ProForm Finishing Products Introduces Environmentally Friendly Packaging

New pail will contain 30 percent post-consumer recycled plastic with same high-quality finishing product

ProForm Finishing Products, LLC, an affiliate of National Gypsum Company, is introducing a new, more environmentally friendly pail while continuing to deliver the same industry-leading product and performance expected by contractors and finishers.

The traditional white ProForm pail will switch to black as the company partners with its pail manufacturer, Berry Global, to include 30 percent post-consumer recycled plastic in each pail. The transition will start in November and take place over the next year at all ProForm manufacturing plants.

“We are making thoughtful changes to our ProForm product packaging with sustainability in mind, while ensuring we maintain the same high quality and performance customers have come to know and trust,” said Joey Penna, general manager of ProForm Finishing Products. “By working with our suppliers to use recycled content in our pails, we are confident in the certification, standards and material testing provided to help us make a positive impact on the environment and reduce waste.”

Before making the transition, the ProForm team conducted field trials and testing with the new pails, including drop tests, compression results, cycle testing and UV testing, and found no impacts to the formula and no quality difference in the pails.

“The manufacturing process remains the same at our ProForm plants across the country,” Penna said. “The transition to the new environmentally friendly pail does not impact how our products are made or perform. Contractors and finishers can expect the exact same quality, consistency and experience.”

As a result of the lower greenhouse gas emissions from Berry Global’s pail production, the final pail product has a lower environmental impact. Switching to the new pail will cut total greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 2,332 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year1 by eliminating 3.8 million pounds of virgin High Density Polyethylene annually. The CO2 savings is equivalent to greenhouse gas emissions from 519 gas-powered passenger vehicles driven in a year, 5,394 barrels of oil consumed, and carbon sequestered by 2,781 acres of U.S. forests in one year.2

The transition to the new pail is an example of the commitment to sustainability by National Gypsum’s family of affiliate companies, which strive to eliminate waste, conserve water and reduce energy usage at every stage of production.

“We look for innovation at every point in the product life cycle,” said Amy Hockett, national marketing manager of architectural services and sustainability for National Gypsum Company. “Reducing the environmental impact of our ProForm packaging supports the circular economy for plastics recycling while delivering the same high-performance finishing products.”

ProForm products are trusted by construction professionals who don’t compromise. From superior bonding to dependable set times, ProForm Finishing Products delivers industry-leading performance for commercial and residential projects, supported by best-in-class customer service.
