Logan Airport Terminal E Modernization was the opportunity for Boston to create a world-class International Terminal to receive visitors into the United States. Suffolk Construction was chosen as the general contractor for the project and brought American Contractors in as a partner in this design-build project. The terminal consisted of over 120,000 square feet of custom Durlum metal ceilings, 50,000 square feet of custom metal wall panels and numerous custom metal trims.

Kansas City, Missouri, recently gained a new airport, becoming the largest single infrastructure project in the city’s history. The University of Florida’s Malachowsky Hall for Data Science & Information Technology is a state-of-the-art facility bringing together several of UF’s prestigious colleges under one roof, with a focus on computing, AI, cybertechnology and communications. Acousti’s Gainesville, Florida, branch installed over 200,000 square feet of acoustical finishes on the project, with 50,000+ square feet of custom wood ceilings from Armstrong World Industries and Rulon International. The project also features designer felt ceilings/walls from Arktura, Turf Design and Autex.

C. J. Coakley Co., Inc. recently finished the bespoke Volkswagen Headquarters in Reston, Virginia. The incredible space allowed the client to combine multiple offices within the Washington, D.C. metro area. The 164,000-square-foot fit-out was designed by Gensler, who took no shortcuts in high-end design. Work included ceilings by Topakustik, Armstrong World Industries, ACGI, USG Building Systems, 9Wood and Pinta Acoustics. Due to complexities amongst all trades, it was a challenging job in all respects.

Suffolk Construction was tasked with building the Winthrop Square Tower project in Boston and partnered with American Contractors to help the project really stand out. American Contractors was responsible for creating a custom, metal-designed ceiling to accentuate the 60-foot-high lobby and really make it a showpiece. American was also tasked with installing a custom stretch ceiling in the pool and spa area and custom wood and metal ceilings throughout the space.

The Gilder Science Education Innovation Center, a 230,000-square-foot addition to an already stunning museum, aims to intertwine experiential architecture with the pressing need for science education. The 1,094 uniquely shaped beams that traverse the insectarium and research library continue the aesthetic of the atrium and evoke the concept of an exoskeleton and a tree canopy, both nestled perfectly within the overall design and yet stand out in an accessible and beautiful learning environment.

The design for the grand stairwell inside the new learning center at Lanier Theological Library in Houston was inspired by the stairwell inside Christ Church at Oxford University in England. While unable to duplicate the centuries-old limestone ceiling inside the church, the design team from Armstrong World Industries recreated the concept of the ribbed, vaulted ceiling using 236 pieces of custom-made CastWorks GRG Forms. The ceiling was installed by Marek Brothers Systems, LLC, of Houston.

The revamped Horseshoe Casino in Lake Charles, Louisiana, showcases a modernized casino structure and renovations to the existing facility. Gordon Incorporated provided the ceilings that extend into the Porte-cochere, featuring a captivating ribbon design. The contrasting finish of the ribbons against the ceiling panels create a visually stunning effect, enhancing the overall appeal. Gordon Incorporated’s scope also included engineered soffits, fascia and column claddings designed to withstand the challenging wind loads associated with hurricanes.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center’s addition required a high-performance ceiling that maintained aesthetics and reduced installation complexity. Facing complications, USG was brought in by Triversity Craft Force to assist with the design of the custom curved drywall grid system in accompaniment of GBBN and Messer Construction. It was after championing this task that the desire to work together through the entirety of the project grew, leading to successes in all three ceiling phases: custom curved drywall, USG Acoustical Drywall System and acoustic ceiling tile. Coupled with timely and effective distribution from L&W Supply and Foundation Building Materials, the resulting ceiling systems exceeded both performance and aesthetic expectations.

Boston Logan International Airport, Terminal E was recently completed. Durlum USA, LLC supplied a metal ceiling that unfolds into a three-story ceiling assembly, gracefully parting to unveil an angled bulkhead ending with a curved metal panel. The unique building’s contours were carefully coordinated with the ceiling assembly to create a ceiling that flowed through the geometry of the building. Planning and manufacturing took over two years to complete the project and produce a stellar ceiling assembly.

High-tech giant Adobe recently constructed an 18-story office building for its employees on its San Jose, California, corporate campus. A total of 202,000 square feet of ceiling panels in a myriad of different ceiling systems were installed. Included among those systems were custom MetalWorks Blades panels from Armstrong World Industries, Vapor ceiling panels from Arktura and custom grid clouds from Turf Design. MagnumDrywall of San Jose installed all the ceilings.

Interior Architects wanted a mix of traditional and open-office modern styles. ASI – AMC Acoustical, owned and operated by American Systems & Installation, was the vendor of choice for the acoustical solid wood and veneer panels for the Pennsylvania State Archives Museum, which is located at 1681 North Sixth Street in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The purpose of the building is to store, safeguard and display critical documents with historical value and antiquity. The original charter of the museum was established in 1694.

The focal point of the recently renovated Redwood LIFE Café in Redwood City, California, is a three-dimensional, geometric wood ceiling comprised of 24 inverted pyramids and integrated lighting. Installed by Northgate Acoustics of Redwood City, the pyramids were created with the collaboration of the Armstrong World Industries ProjectWorks Design Service and used Armstrong World Industries WoodWorks Custom Grille panels. Each ceiling panel was hung individually at an angle and equally spaced to form the pyramid shapes.

Arktura’s Solutions Studio and HKS Architects created two custom solutions for Textron Systems, installed by Casey Construction. The project involved designing, manufacturing and installing distinct focal features: a custom acoustic baffle system and an expansive faceted wall panel system, known as “Geo Wall.” Triangular panels were arranged in various formations to create a striking, sharp, geometric wall design, complemented by linear acoustic baffles in a wood texture that added movement to the office space.

Most striking in this design is the 3D feature wall that was surface modeled by the design team and then taken through to implementation by Topakustik. Every detail was carefully coordinated, from the custom-sequenced Fumed Eucalyptus veneer to the micro-perforated surface, ensuring unparalleled acoustical performance.

The National Museum of Women in the Arts building has a storied past. The original building dates back to 1903. It was a former Masonic temple and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. C. J. Coakley Co., Inc. had to preserve the historic fabric, bring it up to code and provide a facility worthy of the artistic champions whose art is to be displayed there. This was accomplished through collaboration, detail, patience and skilled craftspeople.

And now for the last award, the Founder’s Award. The recipient of this award was chosen by the judges from the projects that received the three highest scores from the judges during the first round of judging. The recipient of the Founder’s Award this year is:

It is unusual in the walls and ceilings business to renovate a project you originally built in the same lifetime. This one is the exception. This building sits between the White House and the Capitol Building. It started off life as a museum, known as the Newseum, and then underwent a massive renovation to become a jewel for Johns Hopkins University. It is a 12-level facility resplendent in wood, metal, acoustic plaster and many other fantastic finishes.
