OSHA Opens Investigation Into Fatal Okan Tower Column Collapse
Worker was killed and several others injured after a structural column fell at the 902-foot project in downtown Miami

A construction worker died and several others were injured after a structural column collapsed at the Okan Tower project in downtown Miami, according to local reports.
Maria Fernanda González Garcia, 25, died after being struck by a structural column that fell from the upper levels of the mixed-use tower under construction on North Miami Avenue near Northwest 6th Street. She was transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
According to reports, the column was being erected on the building's uppermost completed floor when it fell, trapping multiple workers beneath it. Emergency responders transported injured workers to area hospitals. At least one worker reportedly suffered serious injuries and faces a lengthy recovery.
The incident occurred at Okan Tower, a 902-foot mixed-use condominium and hotel development designed to resemble a tulip. As of May 29, the project had reached the 52nd floor and approximately 75% structural completion. Developers said the tower was rising at a rate of about one floor per week and remained on track to top out in the fourth quarter of 2026. Upon completion, Okan Tower is expected to become the second-tallest building in downtown Miami.
Authorities have not released details on what caused the collapse. The incident remains under investigation.
