Buro Happold Selects Denzil Gallagher for Top Role, US Managing Director

Buro Happold has announced the appointment of East Coast-based Denzil Gallagher as U.S. managing director and partner. The move brings Gallagher, a dynamic leader with over three decades of experience with Buro Happold, into this key post at a time of increased success and expansion. Known as a leader on climate change action and a longstanding partner at the firm, Gallagher takes the reins for the 12 offices and over 450 professionals in the United States.

The announcement, made by Buro Happold CEO Oliver Plunkett, came as the company also elevated 15 senior firm members to the rank of partner, bringing the firm’s total to 99 partners globally. Plunkett announced in late June that Gallagher, who had been serving as the interim managing director of the U.S. Region, would assume the permanent position, effective immediately.

“I’m pleased to announce that our longtime partner Denzil Gallagher has been appointed U.S. managing director,” Plunkett said. “Throughout his over-30 years at Buro Happold, including a long tenure as partner, Denzil has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to fostering innovation and creativity in our teams’ work and ensuring we deliver the highest standards for our clients. I can think of no one better to lead our U.S. business during our next phase of rapid growth in this strategically important market.”

Gallagher has served most recently as a partner of Buro Happold, and he specializes in integrated environmental solutions. He started the MEP Engineering and Sustainability disciplines in the U.S. region over 20 years ago, and prior to that, he worked in Buro Happold’s U.K. and Middle East regions. A leader in delivering groundbreaking design and technologies, Gallagher helps forge new models for collaborative design by engaging the full project team–clients, architects, consultants and builders–to enhance building performance. This creative, boundary-breaking work has contributed to the Tower at PNC Plaza in Pittsburgh, a technologically advanced and sustainable office high-rise that exceeded LEED Platinum certification and, when completed, was billed as the “greenest commercial building in the world.”

As an expert in the field, Gallagher frequently speaks at industry events and symposiums on integrated environmental design and innovative engineering methodologies for a wide range of projects, from commercial buildings and mixed-use urban developments to higher education, cultural institutions, and science and technology buildings.

Other recent projects with Gallagher’s leadership have included the University of Pennsylvania’s Amy Gutmann Hall, Philadelphia’s first mass timber building, which is opening this fall; Arizona State University’s award-winning Rob and Melani Walton Center for Planetary Health, as well as the Beus Center for Law and Society; Yale University’s new, energy-efficient residential colleges; and the regenerative and innovative Expo 2020 Sustainability Pavilion in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

“I am delighted to continue our transformation and growth in the United States, especially at this time when Buro Happold is cementing its global leadership in building environments, sustainability and climate change,” Gallagher said. “Buro Happold is committed to the highest levels of design, creativity and environmental stewardship, and I look forward to working with our clients to help solve their challenges in this space.”

Buro Happold is one of the world’s leading engineering consultancies and has helped create many of the most recognized and innovative places across the globe, including New York’s High Line; the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles; London’s Olympic Park and Stadium; Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium; the World Towers in Mumbai, India; and Jewel Changi Airport, home to the tallest indoor waterfall on the planet. Buro Happold is active in 35-plus locations worldwide and aiming to grow to 4,000 employees in the next few years, creating better balance and resilience across regions and making Buro Happold a truly global organization.
