Walls & Ceilings Editor John Wyatt interviews Mike Taylor of Liddle Brothers, the magazine's March cover star. Taylor discusses the company's expertise in historic plaster restoration, its expansion into modern exterior cladding and acoustical plaster systems, and the importance of training the next generation of skilled craftsmen. He also reflects on the family values that shaped the business and the strong future of commercial construction across Middle Tennessee.
Founded in the 1930s, the company remains one of the region's leading experts in historical plaster restoration. Its craftsmen continue to restore ornate crown moldings, decorative plaster, and architectural details in state and federal buildings throughout the region.
"Interior plaster has always been our forte," Taylor said. "We have a staff that specializes in historical restoration and recreating the distinct look and feel these buildings require."
While preserving historic architecture remains a cornerstone of the business, approximately 95 percent of the company's current workload is commercial construction. Liddle Brothers installs EIFS, traditional stucco, cement panel systems, and thin-set stone on projects across Middle Tennessee.
Taylor explained that advancements in weather-resistive barriers, drainage systems, and exterior wall assemblies have significantly improved the long-term performance of these cladding systems, particularly in the South's humid climate. New drainage mats and foam-backed stucco assemblies have helped reduce moisture-related concerns while improving durability.
Beyond conventional commercial work, Liddle Brothers has intentionally developed specialized niche services. One of its most successful ventures has been acoustical plaster systems, including BASWAphon, which are widely used for sound control.
That expertise has opened doors within Nashville's renowned music industry. The company regularly installs acoustical plaster in recording studios and performance spaces where sound quality is critical.
"Our acoustical systems provide the soundproofing these studios are looking for," Taylor said. "It's become a great niche for us."
Taylor also emphasized the importance of investing in workforce development. Training varies depending on the specialty, with some employees spending years mastering modern façade systems, while historical plaster restoration often requires decades of experience to perfect.
"You never completely master it," Taylor said. "You continue learning throughout your career. We pair young workers with experienced craftsmen so they can develop those skills over time."
Looking ahead, Taylor remains optimistic about the Nashville construction market. The region continues to benefit from population growth, expanding healthcare facilities, corporate relocations, and ongoing commercial development. Liddle Brothers is currently working on several major projects, including construction related to In-N-Out Burger's new corporate presence in the Franklin and Brentwood areas.
The conversation concluded with Taylor reflecting on the company's family legacy. He credited his late father-in-law, who led the business after its founding, for teaching him the values that continue to guide the company today.
"He taught me to treat people fairly, and normally they'll treat you fairly," Taylor said. "His wisdom shaped the way we do business."
That philosophy, combined with nearly a century of craftsmanship and a willingness to embrace innovation, continues to position Liddle Brothers Contractors for success in an evolving construction industry.Looking for a reprint of this article?
