The National Association of Home Builders Research Center recently issued a pamphlet that expands on its previous position regarding moisture intrusion, suggesting that all exterior claddings have the potential for creating sheathing and stud damage if they are not properly flashed and sealed.

Exterior claddings including brick, stucco, vinyl siding, and exterior insulation and finish systems all have the same potential for sheathing and stud damage if weather barriers, flashings and opening protections are not used or are installed incorrectly, NAHB reported.

The pamphlet makes no reference to EIFS as a potential source of moisture problems, and includes a home design checklist, as well as window and deck flashing details that are similar to those published in the new EIMA "Guide to EIFS Construction."
