AISI Publishes Brick Veneer CFS Framing Design Guide

June 23, 2014

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has published the 2013 edition of the “Brick Veneer Cold-Formed Steel Framing Design Guide,” it was announced today. The guide, which updates CF03-1, “Steel Stud Brick Veneer Design Guide” (published in 2003), assists practicing structural engineers and architects in the design of brick veneer anchored to a backing of cold-formed steel framing.

It is available for purchase at AISI’s online Steel Store at http://bit.ly/1lLjHsl.

“Brick veneer cold-formed steel framing is a popular and economical wall system that performs well when properly designed, combining the pleasing appearance and durability of brick with the structural reliability of steel,” said Jay Larson, P.E., F.ASCE, managing director, construction technical program. “This new edition of the design guide provides a review of the relevant structural and building science principles, covers general guidelines for detailing of these walls, gives specific structural design recommendations, and offers design examples covering various elements of the system. The primary focus of this publication is commercial and high-rise residential buildings. The provisions may be overly conservative for low-rise residential buildings.

“AISI is pleased to dedicate the 2013 edition of the design guide to Tom Trestain, P.Eng. of T.W.J. Trestain Structural Engineering in Toronto, the original author of this guide as well as the ‘Cold-Formed Steel Framing Design Guide,’” said Larson. “Tom’s tireless work and countless contributions to cold-formed steel framing design practices over the years have greatly advanced our industry and the use of our products in the marketplace.”

“AISI Brick Veneer Cold-Formed Steel Framing Design Guide” was approved by the AISI Committee on Framing Standards and the AISI Committee on Specifications. It is endorsed by the Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry, Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute, Steel Framing Alliance, Steel Framing Industry Association, and the Steel Stud Manufacturers Association.
