Harry W. Martin Recognized for Public Safety Leadership by NIBS
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced that Harry W. (Hank) Martin has been recognized with the Excellence Award of the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC). NIBS recently recognized the leaders who have provided significant direction to the BSSC mission which contributes to the organization’s success. Martin is retired from AISI, where he was managing director of construction codes and standards.
“While at AISI, Hank Martin was a leader and innovator for steel in the construction codes and standards arena,” said Robert J. Wills, P.E., vice president of construction for AISI. “His work to advance the performance of steel framing in seismic events moved our industry forward, helping to keep steel competitive in the building construction marketplace. We appreciate Hank’s valued contributions to our industry during his career and congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition.”
The NIBS Building Seismic Safety Council celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. On March 4, leaders virtually participated in the BSSC Meeting and Symposium to celebrate the 2020 National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program Recommended Seismic Provisions (FEMA P-2082)-10th edition. The council has coordinated the efforts of federal agencies, the building industry and thousands of subject matter experts to develop 10 editions of the NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions, which have served as the foundation of the nation’s seismic standards and model building codes.
Lakisha A. Woods, CAE, president and CEO of NIBS, thanked award recipients for their dedication to NIBS and their hard work to keep the nation’s residents safe. “This award is bestowed upon those who have distinguished themselves in technical positions, in leadership, and as leaders in government and private engineering organizations,” Woods said. “These efforts have improved building performance, minimized the damage from earthquakes and saved lives.”
