Jill Bloom speaks with Mike Mazzone of Statewide General Contracting about the evolving construction landscape in Hawaii, where growth is beginning to pick up after a slow few years. Mazzone shares his personal journey into the industry, the company’s shift toward specialty work like stretched fabric systems, and his unique perspective as a contractor based in the islands.

“Hawaii has been improving though the last few years have been kind of slow,” said Mazzone. “But right now, we are forecasting things are starting to pick up.”

Although Michael Mazzone started his company, Statewide General Contracting & Construction Inc., in 2004, his passion for this industry began much earlier than that – it started when

he was only six years of age. After watching his childhood home burn down, he became inspired by the rebuild, and eventually, he, and four other friends started a drywall business doing smaller-scale projects on tenant improvement and remodels until Statewide General Contracting & Construction was formed.

“We started to look at different specialties and concentrating on those,” Mazzone said. He said almost a decade ago the company looked in and adopted stretched fabric, and replacing pre-manufactured panels. “The stretched fabric is better for us because we can manufacture [these] right on site.”
