Building a Legacy
From Bedroom Startup to Industry Leader: The State of Washington Best Finishes
For 15 years, Washington Best Finishes, led by President Israel Alvarez, has grown from a small garage operation into one of the most trusted specialty subcontractors in the Pacific Northwest.

When Israel Alvarez looks back on the journey of Washington Best Finishes, he recalls long nights working from his kid’s bedroom, later upgrading to his garage, before finally moving into a fully staffed office and warehouse. “Our first project had just six team members, including myself,” Alvarez reflects. “Today, we have a strong team of more than 80 professionals and take on multimillion-dollar contracts.”
Founded in Auburn, Wash., Washington Best Finishes has become a go-to subcontractor for general contractors across the region, specializing in framing, insulation, firestopping, drywall and a growing portfolio of construction specialties, such as doors, hardware, site improvements, and painting.

A Lifelong Passion for Construction
For Alvarez, construction isn’t just a career, it’s a legacy. His father was a contractor and as a child, he spent summers on job sites, learning the craft firsthand. That early exposure sparked a lifelong passion that continues to fuel his leadership style today.
“I’ve seen our company grow, but the most rewarding part is seeing our people grow,” Alvarez says. “Watching apprentices evolve into skilled leaders and team members strengthen their abilities: that’s success.”
Washington Best Finishes has carved a niche in public commercial projects, with a strong presence in schools, multifamily buildings, and job order contracting for government entities. The company also prides itself on tackling challenging projects with complex logistics, such as the Newport High School modernization and additions.
This four-phase, multi-year project (overseen by Cornerstone General Contractors with design by NAC Architecture) required extensive coordination in an occupied school facility. Washington Best Finishes’ scope of work included cold-formed metal framing, thermal insulation, gypsum board systems, and firestop systems. “The focus was on performance (acoustics, thermal efficiency, and fire-rated assemblies) to create a safe, high-performing building,” Alvarez explains. The company is a member of the Northwest Wall and Ceiling Bureau, where W&C met the company at this year’s annual event.

Commitment to Safety, Quality and Relationships
What sets Washington Best Finishes apart is its culture of safety, quality and professionalism. Every project is approached with proactive planning and a focus on building long-term relationships. That commitment has earned the company trust with both contractors and suppliers, enabling it to thrive even in uncertain times.
“The construction climate is competitive right now,” Alvarez says. “Pricing pressures are increasing, while material and labor costs rise. But we remain steady because of the relationships we’ve built and our proactive approach.”
Despite an industry slowdown, Alvarez forecasts a busy and steady year ahead, with strong partnerships helping the company close out 2025 on solid ground. Long-term, Washington Best Finishes plans to continue expanding its specialties while never compromising on quality.

“Our greatest achievement isn’t a project—it’s our people,” Alvarez emphasizes. “Their growth, both personally and professionally, is what makes us who we are.”
When he isn’t overseeing projects, Alvarez enjoys spending time with his family, volunteering in his community, and playing golf. A lover of philosophy and culture, he dreams of touring Japan and often finds wisdom in scripture. His specialty dish, Zarandeado grilled shrimp, is a family favorite; a reminder that success, like good food, is best when shared.
