Fire-rated Sheathing Cuts Layers, Labor from Arclin
Firepoint sheathing adds up to 90-min rating, larger panels cut seams, speed installs on site.

Firepoint is a structural sheathing with integrated intumescent technology, delivering up to 90 minutes of fire resistance within wall assemblies, according to the manufacturer. That level of performance may allow crews to meet or exceed fire-resistance requirements without adding gypsum layers, coatings or specialty treatments—reducing board handling, staging and sequencing complexity. Contractors should verify tested assembly listings and local code acceptance before substituting components.
New 4x9 and 4x10 panel formats target tall-wall and multifamily applications, where vertical continuity and fewer horizontal joints can improve installation speed. Fewer seams translate to less blocking, taping or treatment at joints, and reduced potential for air or fire pathway discontinuities—common failure points in rated assemblies. Larger panels, however, require planning for material handling, lift equipment and crew size to maintain productivity and safety.
Because Firepoint installs similarly to standard OSB, crews can keep familiar fastening patterns and layout practices, which may limit retraining and reduce installation errors. The manufacturer positions the product as suitable for wildland-urban interface (WUI) areas; contractors working in these zones should confirm compliance with local WUI provisions and tested wall assemblies, including interface details at penetrations and transitions.
From a cost and schedule standpoint, the system’s value proposition is fewer layers and faster dry-in, potentially reducing labor hours and coordination across trades. Risk considerations include ensuring compatibility with weather-resistive barriers (WRBs), claddings and interior gypsum systems, and maintaining continuity at floor lines and shaftwall interfaces where fire-resistance ratings must be preserved.
Arclin reports its Firepoint fire-resistant sheathing has been named a 2026 Sustainable Product of the Year by Green Builder Media, marking a second consecutive recognition. For wall and ceiling contractors, the relevance centers on assembly simplification, panel size changes and fire-resistance performance that can affect layout, fastening schedules and inspection outcomes.
