The Finish Line: Katrina One Year After

Robert Thomas
November 8, 2006

First, you can go to New Orleans right now and have a good time, at least in the popular tourist areas, which look like nothing ever happened. But if you drive a little way from those restored areas, it's a different story. There are blocks and blocks of abandoned single-story houses and there are shopping areas that look fine, except a lot are not open. These buildings are in the areas that were flooded and stayed submerged.

The code also defines a "wind-borne debris region" as an area hurricane-prone where the basic wind speed is 110 mph or greater. The code states that if a building is located in a wind-borne debris area, the window glazing must be impact resistant or protected by an impact resistant covering.

Michael Gardner

One of gypsum board's many qualities that make it the most popular material for partitioning interior spaces is its inherent sound attenuating properties. Gypsum board contains sufficient mass to inhibit most low frequency sound waves and has sufficient resiliency to inhibit sound waves at the higher frequencies. In other words, gypsum board reduces the sound passing through it at both ends of the frequency spectrum.

Trowel Talk: Fixing the Big Easy-Ain't Gonna Be Easy

My first visit to New Orleans was in February 1990. I was a new labor trustee on a pension and health and welfare plan, and I was there to attend training classes at the International Foundation of Employee Benefits Conference. I was so jazzed, pun fully intended, about experiencing the town for the first time. From the sights and sounds of Bourbon Street, to the chickaree laced coffee and beignets at Café du Monde, it certainly lived up to its hype.
