Flak Jacket protection includes a specialty coating the company applies to TJI joists to enhance its fire resistance. This new TJI joist option provides builders with a simple, cost-effective way to achieve one-hour floor/ceiling assemblies and to comply with the new 2012 IRC fire protection requirements. The product is durable and does not require special tools or training to use. In multi-family buildings, TJI joists with Flak Jacket protection provide a one-hour fire-rated assembly with only a single layer of gypsum and no expensive mineral wool. The protected joists also meet 2012 IRC R501.3 fire-protection requirements in single-family homes. This means, when TJI joists with Flak Jacket protection are used in unfinished basements of single-family homes, there’s no need to install gypsum or wallboard. The company provides a limited lifetime warranty on TJI joists with Flak Jacket protection. The protected joists will be available in multiple series and depths to meet a range of load bearing requirements.
