As one of the most densely populated regions in the country that features some of the busiest and congested traffic, Los Angeles and its surrounding counties must place great thought and investment into city planning. With the transit needs of more than three million people to service annually, the city of Anaheim knew it needed to set a model of excellence for public transportation in Southern California. After extensive planning, designs were set for the new Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC), with goals to not only address the community’s needs, but also become the first-ever Platinum LEED transportation hub.

Led by Clark Construction Group-California LP and envisioned by architects from HOK, designs for ARTIC called for a 67,000-square-foot facility totaling $187 million. Occupying 16 acres near Angel Stadium of Anaheim, the complex services 10 modes of transportation and is comprised of 1,000 parking spaces, bike lockers, electric vehicle charging stations, community and dining space, and retailers. All of these services are centered on the crowning achievement of the project – a three-story domed structure composed of crisscrossing steel arches and colossal windows that create a naturally lit and welcoming atrium.

The structure’s mixed-medium exterior combines metal with curtainwall and incorporates its signature steel arches and translucent long-span plastic, creating the parabolic aesthetic. A portion of the exterior of the facility was constructed with Econolap Exposed Fastener CENTRIA metal wall panels coated in Sherwin-Williams Coil Coating’s Fluropon 70 percent PVDF architectural coating in a custom silver.

Well known for its high-performance qualities and durability, including superior resistance to ultraviolet rays and exceptional dirt and stain resistance, Sherwin-Williams Coil Coating’s Fluropon offers many valuable features to ARTIC. Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings not only earn LEED points for structures, which was one of the goals for this project, but Fluropon’s outstanding color retention and consistency also help achieve aesthetic vibrancy.

Opening in 2014, Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center has been a resounding success, both for the citizens of greater Los Angeles and as a building in its own right. Not only did ARTIC reach its goal of earning LEED-NC Platinum certification, it also won numerous architecture awards, including the American Public Works Association 2015 Public Works Project of the Year and the United States Green Building Council Eco City Award.
