Mercer Mass Timber, a low-carbon advanced manufacturer of timber building materials and a subsidiary of Mercer International Inc., announced June 15 that the acquisition of Structurlam Mass Timber Corporation and its subsidiaries by parent company Mercer International has been completed. Mercer Mass Timber will immediately take possession and continue the operation of Structurlam’s manufacturing facilities, which will now operate under the “Mercer Mass Timber” brand, including production facilities located in Conway, Arkansas, and in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada.

The sale of Structurlam to Mercer International closed on June 15. The acquisition will materially increase the existing mass timber production capacity at Mercer Mass Timber and cement their position as a leading producer of mass timber products. Mercer Mass Timber now holds all of Structurlam’s brand assets, product and project portfolios, and intellectual property. Both the Conway and Penticton facilities will remain open and operational.

“We are thrilled to welcome Structurlam into the Mercer Mass Timber fold,” said Brian Merwin, Senior Vice President of Mercer Mass Timber. “This acquisition will allow us to offer our customers a wider range of mass timber products and to better support their projects with the addition of more cross laminated timber capacity and glulam production capabilities. Our goal is to become a one-stop-shop for all mass timber needs. The additional manufacturing facilities that the Structurlam acquisition brings will enable us to create greater efficiencies.”

The addition of Structurlam will provide Mercer Mass Timber with a number of strategic benefits, including:

  • Increased product portfolio, capacity and production capabilities: This acquisition materially increases Mercer Mass Timber’s capacity for cross laminated timber. What’s more, it adds glulam production capabilities - 45,000 cubic meters of capacity to be precise. This will enable Mercer Mass Timber to support larger, more complex projects.
  • Bolsters technical mass timber expertise, enhancing client services: The acquisition will bring together a wealth of industry leadership and experience. With their collective expertise, Mercer Mass Timber is better equipped to tackle multifaceted projects, offer innovative solutions and navigate the dynamic landscape of the industry.
  • Expanded geographic reach: Project services will now include both the U.S. and international markets, expanding access to more sustainable building materials, which will support global net-zero initiatives in these markets and anywhere else there’s a need for mass timber.
  • Secures larger market share: With an increased market share, Mercer Mass Timber will have greater influence in the standardization of product specifications for mass timber within the North American industry. Currently, materials like steel and concrete are standardized - Mercer Mass Timber’s goal is to create similar influence, to facilitate the larger adoption of mass timber, a more sustainable building material.
