The ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, recently removed its lawsuit against two contractors that supposedly started a fire near its campus, reported MyNewsLA. The fire caused the campus to shut down temporarily, as well as damage to the landscape.

The college’s lawsuit said that the contractors breached their contracts and were negligent, but the school asked the judge to dismiss the case “with prejudice,” which means that it cannot be refiled.

It is unclear if the college dropped the lawsuit because it reached a settlement with the contractors, but a mediator was previously selected for the case.

The college agreed to a contract with one of the contractors in March 2021 to renovate an auditorium, and the contractor signed a subcontracting agreement the other contractor afterward.

While working on the auditorium, the contractors supposedly started a fire on the hillside next to the campus. The fire resulted in the college closing temporarily, as well as the school’s landscape and irrigation system being marred.

“Although the Art Center has repeatedly demanded that [the] defendants remedy the damages that they caused, [they] have failed and refused to do so and have committed additional breaches, resulting in further damage to the ArtCenter,” the lawsuit stated.
