Grenade Discovery Behind Wall in Kansas Home Triggers Bomb Squad Response, Streets Reopened Safely
A Lawrence man’s discovery of a grenade behind a wall during home renovations prompted a temporary evacuation, but bomb experts later confirmed it was non-lethal and safely removed it.
A Lawrence, Kan., neighborhood was temporarily evacuated Wednesday afternoon after a man discovered a grenade hidden behind drywall while remodeling a home.
According to the Lawrence Police Department, officers and emergency crews responded around 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 8 to the area of 9th and Iowa Street after the man reported finding the device and placing it in his pickup truck.
Bomb technicians quickly secured the scene and determined that the grenade was a non-lethal device designed to release gas and rubber balls. The Leavenworth County Bomb Squad safely took possession of it for proper disposal.
Authorities confirmed that no one was injured and the area was reopened once the device was removed. Police said no further updates are expected.
