ROCKWOOL Smartrock Now Available Nationwide in U.S.

An innovative commercial and residential solution for mass wall insulations.

North America’s leading manufacturer of stone wool insulation—is expanding the availability of ROCKWOOL Smartrock to the entire continental United States. Smartrock was introduced in 2025 to give architects, specifiers, contractors, and installers a new integrated solution for insulating mass concrete and masonry walls from the interior.

This innovative solution combines a stone wool insulation board with an integrated smart vapor retarder to create a layer of continuous insulation (ci) on the interior of mass wall assemblies. Smartrock provides exceptional thermal, vapor, and air control (once taped and air sealed across penetrations) in one product—helping design teams meet thermal code requirements, achieve vapor control for both retrofit and new construction projects, and support sustainability and energy efficiency goals.

Smartrock is available in thicknesses ranging from 2” to 6” to meet residential and commercial energy code requirements in all regions of the United States.

Meeting market demand for new solutions

“We are expanding the availability of Smartrock due to the incredible market response it received when launched in 2025,” says Ryan Martin, Senior Product Manager, ROCKWOOL North America. “Building professionals recognize the benefits of this innovation in meeting both performance goals and installation efficiency—reducing a step for contractors.”

He adds, “Smartrock is backed by ICC-ES ESR-5374 making it a reliable choice for architects and buildings owners—supporting the preservation of original facades, compliance with code requirements, and adhering to lot line restrictions. The integrated smart vapor retarder enables Smartrock to adapt to changing moisture and humidity conditions, while ensuring long-term thermal performance and supporting the durability of the building enclosure.”

Building professionals who have used Smartrock since its introduction agree that the combination of performance benefits and ease of installation are meeting a need for more options in the market.

“We installed Smartrock in our own building because we know the blend of continuous insulation and the integrated smart vapor retarder will help create an energy efficient, durable, and comfortable workplace. Our team really enjoyed the installation process, too; Smartrock is easy to cut, doesn’t produce a lot of dust, and reduces time and stress with the pre-applied vapor retarder. We are so glad to have this new option for insulating mass walls available.”

  • Ben Bogie, Director of Outreach & Education and Production Manager at BPC Green Builders

“Smartrock was a huge win for the team. We used a lot of it, and the crews were able to install it with minimal training because the process is so straightforward. It was a perfect fit for mass wall conditions on the project and it simplified what was originally designed as a two-part approach (ROCKWOOL + Intello) into one clean, repeatable system."

  • Jonathan Finewood, Director of Passive House Services

Features and benefits of Smartrock include:

  • Thermal performance – stone wool insulation provides stable long-term thermal performance
  • Smart vapor control – Smartrock has an integrated smart vapor retarder to control vapor movement through the assembly, allowing the masonry or concrete to dry in both directions
  • Airtightness – the integrated membrane provides an airtight layer when installed with proper sealing of insulation joints and fastener penetrations
  • Efficient installation – having the integrated membrane on Smartrock means installers do not need to install a separate vapor retarder; installation is straightforward with standard construction tools
  • Fire Resilience − Smartrock is a Class A fire-rated material in accordance with ASTM E84, and is classified as a noncombustible material in accordance with IBC Section 703.3.1
  • Dual-density design – Smartrock conforms to the substrate to eliminate gaps behind the insulation, and the lighter weight also makes the board easy to handle

Smartrock utilizes INTELLO PLUS from Pro Clima, a leading smart vapor retarder in North America, as the integrated membrane. This vapor retarder adapts to changing moisture and humidity conditions, for substrates such as brick, concrete masonry units (CMUs), concrete, and stone. This variable vapor permeability controls the risk of condensation within as well as on the interior side of the masonry, supporting the durability and resilience of the assembly—and improving the health and comfort of the building's occupants.
