Canadian Pacific Kansas City will begin rail service to a new gypsum wallboard manufacturing facility operated by CGC Inc. in Wheatland County. The plant is scheduled to come online before summer and is positioned to expand wallboard supply across Western Canada, reported Progressive Railroading.
The 220,000-square-foot facility represents a CA$210 million investment and will increase production of CGC’s Sheetrock-brand gypsum board. The site is located adjacent to CPKC’s mainline, enabling direct rail access for inbound raw materials and outbound finished board shipments to regional distribution markets.
For contractors and distributors, proximity to Class I rail infrastructure may reduce freight costs and improve delivery reliability, particularly for high-volume wallboard assemblies where logistics can materially impact installed cost. Rail-served plants also tend to support more stable supply during peak demand cycles, helping mitigate jobsite delays tied to material shortages.
CGC indicates the facility is designed to be its most environmentally sustainable plant to date. While specific system details were not disclosed, newer wallboard plants typically incorporate energy-efficient calcination, water recycling and emissions controls—factors that can influence material availability, lead times and potential specification preferences tied to environmental performance.
