I have just returned from four very hot days in Rancho Mirage, Calif., where I attended the Northwest Wall & Ceiling Bureau's Annual Convention. The NWCB's staff-Bob, Mark, Tiina and Angela-really put on a great show in terms of scheduling and production for the 613 attendees. Although they have help from the sponsors, it really comes down to their hard work to put on a great show. Those contractors in the northwest are lucky to have a bureau such as them.

Carrying some tough measures, such as allowing police to ask for legal documentation at any time from anyone they please, this bill has some far-reaching consequences-the largest of which might be psychological. Members of your present workforce will walk around with compounded levels of fear, as if this is not already an issue. Will the new proposed fences to be built on the border as part of this Bill hold back a future group of immigrants? It is doubtful, to be sure.

The old Patent Office Building located in Washington D.C., has served our country since July 4, 1836. It is the third oldest federal building still in use in our nation's Capitol and as its name suggests, the building was originally the home of the U.S. Patent Office and invention exhibit. Said to be one of the largest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States, this historic structure survived two fires and was saved from the wrecking ball by an act of Congress. It was given to the Smithsonian Institute in 1968, serving as the National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum.

"I was surprised how well that thing ran," says Sandor Szilagyi, Troy Metal Concept's main finisher, remarking on the management of last year's Habitat for Humanity project in Detroit. Most of the area drywall contractors in southeast Michigan contributed to this project. Wixom, Mich.'s, Troy Metal was there for two days rocking and taping for the Jimmy Carter Blitz Build. Since the Habitat project, the company has been working at the Beaumont Hospital Macomb Ambulatory Care Center.

The lowest of the lowbrows are people taken by the transparent Internet con games. By now everyone with an e-mail address has been contacted by an African of supposedly royal heritage willing to cut you in on millions of ill-gotten dollars if only you will assist in getting the moolah out of the country. A variation on the theme has an alleged lawyer searching for a living relative of someone with your last name who was tragically killed in a car accident leaving lots of money behind. Or you've been notified of winning a foreign lottery that you never knew existed.

All Things Gypsum: Endless Potential

Gypsum wallboard or "drywall" has become the preferred surface material used in the construction of interior walls and partitions. In residential construction, gypsum wallboard is also the preferred material for interior ceiling surfaces. Now that this material is so commonly used and surrounds us in our daily lives, we tend to think of it in terms of a plain, flat, bland surface over which a neutral colored paint or nondescript wallcovering is applied.

To what extent should society insist on terrorist-proof buildings? In post-Sept. 11, should we construct every new building so that it is completely safe from a terrorist action or should we view terrorism as a random event and construct buildings much as we have in the past?

Although energy efficiency and green buildings are buzz phrases in today's society, some people may not realize how air barriers can help with energy conservation, indoor air quality, reduced mechanical load and related issues of mold and material degradation.

Finish Line: Rebuilding Sealant Joints

Robert Thomas

One of the questions I am frequently asked is how to fix sealant joints when the edge of the EIFS is coming apart or the sealant has detached from the EIFS, or when the sealant simply wears out. Sometimes, the old sealant can be removed and the existing edge of the EIFS reused for the application of new sealant.
