The price of materials and services used in nonresidential construction jumped 12.6 percent in September from a year earlier despite a dip of 0.2 percent last month, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of government data released Oct. 12. Association officials note that the construction industry was suffering the most from inflation, adding that new Buy America rules set to go into effect as soon as next month will only make the situation more dire.

Columbus McKinnon Corporation, a leading designer and manufacturer of intelligent motion solutions, products and technologies for material handling, was recently awarded a patent for a slotted hook latch, which is used on the company’s Clevlok and Quick-Connect sling hooks. Protected by Patent No. 11,390,493, the slotted latch design allows for better seating of the latch in the hook to prevent disengagement or damage to the latch — ultimately keeping loads more secure, reducing the risk of damaged equipment and enhancing operator safety.

Ware Malcomb, an award-winning international design firm, announced Oct. 11 that Michael Herseth has joined the firm as Civil Engineering Manager in the firm’s Seattle office.
