Finding Purpose in Uncertain Times
In times of uncertainty, the construction industry, such as the people who power it, can transform fear into purpose, innovation, and strength.

I recently read “Uncertainty: Turning Fear and Doubt into Fuel for Brilliance” by Jonathan Fields. It’s a story that begins with a bold decision: Fields left a successful law career to become a personal trainer and open a yoga studio in New York City—just weeks before 9/11.
What followed was a test of courage and creativity in one of the most uncertain moments imaginable. He could have quit. Instead, he used fear as fuel to rebuild with purpose.
In many ways, the construction industry—especially the walls and ceilings trades—faces a similar crossroads today. Everywhere you turn, there’s uncertainty: material costs, permitting delays, economic pressures, and above all, the persistent labor shortage challenging contractors nationwide.
Strength in the Face of the Unknown
Behind that challenge are real people—especially the Latino craftsmen who make up such a vital part of our workforce. Many face fears that extend beyond the job site: uncertainty about their future, their families, and their place in an industry they’ve helped build with their own hands.
And yet, they persevere. They show up every morning, tools in hand, bringing skill, artistry, and pride to every project. They are the heartbeat of our trade, and their strength amid uncertainty should inspire every one of us.
Fields reminds us that brilliance isn’t born from comfort; it’s born from the unknown. We’re seeing that truth play out across our industry as contractors find new ways to attract and train workers, adopt technology, and build stronger company cultures that value people as much as performance.
As we move forward, let’s embrace the unknown with courage. Let’s keep learning, leading, and building: not just stronger walls and ceilings but stronger teams and communities. Because it’s in uncertain times that our brilliance as builders truly shines.
