Benjamin Scales: From Jobsite Tools to Courtroom Expertise

Not your typical building enclosure consultant

Benjamin Scales, you quickly realize he’s not your typical building enclosure consultant. Based in Galveston, TX, Benjamin wears many hats—Litigation Support Specialist, Subject Matter Expert, and Educator at WH Coltzer. His work lives at the unique intersection of building science and the law—where roofs, stucco, windows, and waterproofing systems can determine the outcome of multi-million-dollar disputes.

With more than 22 years of experience, Benjamin’s career has been a steady climb through nearly every corner of the industry. He started delivering materials to jobsites, picked up tools, ran his own contracting business, and eventually became a sought-after expert witness. He’s been, as he puts it, “in just about every seat at the table—from installer to courtroom testifying expert.”

Every building tells a story if you know where to look. Thermal patterns, moisture trails, cracks, stains—it’s like CSI for construction.

At WH Coltzer, Benjamin and his team combine forensic analysis, ASTM field testing, commissioning services, and expert reporting to help building owners, attorneys, and insurance carriers understand not just what went wrong—but how to fix it. Their work thrives in today’s fast-paced, increasingly litigious construction climate.

A Passion for Education and Accountability

Benjamin is also deeply invested in shaping the next generation of construction science professionals. Through affiliations with IIBEC, NABCTA, PMI, the National Bar Association, and Texas universities, he works to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world practice.

“The next phase in energy efficiency is accountability,” Benjamin explains. “Verification, testing, and commissioning are the backbone. You can’t manage what you don’t measure.” His message to subcontractors is simple: airtightness comes first. Without it, no HVAC system or triple-pane window can perform as intended.

Life Beyond the Envelope

Outside of work, Benjamin is quick to trade forensic investigations for downtime with his wife of 29 years and their two energetic Australian Shepherds, Angus and Malcolm. He also loves reading and pursuing hobbies that keep his curiosity alive.

Looking Ahead

Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Benjamin’s long-term goals are ambitious but clear: scale his impact through litigation support, education, and training tools that make expert knowledge accessible across the industry. Whether in a classroom, courtroom, or construction site, he’s driven by one philosophy:

With a career that spans from swinging hammers to shaping legal outcomes, Benjamin Scales proves that true expertise doesn’t just solve problems—it prevents them, teaches others, and makes the industry stronger for the future.
